Cooperative Study on Marine Spatial Planning in Xichang, Thailand

Thailand is an important country along the Maritime Silk Road. It is one of the key countries to promote and implement the Framework Plan for International Cooperation in the South China Sea and its surrounding oceans. With the funding of the China Oceanic Development Foundation, the First Institute of Oceangraphy, MNR undertook a cooperative research project on marine space planning in Xichang, Thailand, which aims to improve Thailand's marine space planning compiling, evaluation and monitoring capabilities through the preparation of marine space planning and related training and seminars, to help build Thailand's marine space planning system, and to strengthen the in-depth cooperation between China and Thailand in the marine field.

With the support of the Department of Marine and Coastal Protection of Thailand (DMCR), the First Institute of Oceangraphy, MNR has decided to cooperate with the Thai Prince Songkhla University (PSU) in Thailand on marine space planning. The planned scope is the Xichang Sea area of Thailand. The land area includes Xichang Island and surrounding islands. The sea area includes the sea area around Xichang Island and extends east to the sea area near the port area of Chonburi Province. At present, the First Ocean Institute has carried out marine spatial planning technical training for the Thai Marine and Coast Division and relevant marine managers of Chonburi Province, and collected and compiled the basic data of economic, social, resource and environmental resources of Xichang Island and Chonburi Province, and completed the interpretation of remote sensing images of Xichang Island.
