Study on the Preparation of Bangladesh's Marine Spatial Plan

Bangladesh is a world's most populous country with poor land resources. It is urgent to develop and utilize marine resources to promote economic development. With the funding from China Oceanic Development Foundation, the National Ocean Technology Center undertook the Bangladesh Marine Spatial Planning Research Project, which aims to apply the concepts, technologies, and programs of the marine spatial planning of China to the Bangladesh government, navy, universities, and research institutions to carry out cooperation for jointly preparing the marine space plan of Bangladesh, promote the implementation of the marine space plan by the Bangladeshi government, promote the development of marine economy in Bangladesh, promote the coordinated development and protection of marine resource, and promote the well-being of coastal people.

On June 20, 2019, the director of the Blue Economy Office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh went to the National Ocean Technology Center to carry out cooperation and exchange of the marine space planning between China and Bangladesh. The two sides reached a consensus on signing a marine space planning cooperation document, and worked out that the planned scope was The entire territory of Bangladesh, that is, more than 30,000 square kilometers of sea and coastal areas. The National Ocean Technology Center will form a China-Bangladesh Marine Spatial Planning Working Group with the Blue Economy Office, Bangladesh Maritime University, Naval Maritime Research and Development Institute, Institute of Oceanography, and Institute of Marine Science and Fisheries of Chittagong University to launch Bangladesh ’s preparation of marine spatial planning.
