"National Beach Cleanup for Beautiful Ocean" Marine Public Welfare Activities Started Smoothly in Haikou

September 16th, 2017 is the 28th International Beach Cleaning Day. To promote the marine environmental protection and unit the whole society's love of the sea, with the support of the Department of Ecological Environment Protection of the State Oceanic Administration, the marine public welfare activity of "National Beach Cleanup for Beautiful Ocean" sponsored jointly by the China Oceanic Development Foundation, the Publicity and Education Center of the State Oceanic Administration, the China Young Volunteers Association, the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, Hainan Provincial Department of Oceans and Fisheries, and the Haikou Municipal People's Government and undertaken by the BlueRibbon Ocean Conservation Association was successfully launched at the main venue in Haikou, Hainan. At the same time, branch venues in Dalian of Liaoning, Chongwu of Fujian, Qingdao of Shandong, and other places also carried out this series of public welfare activities on the same day.

Hu Songqin, Deputy Director of the Department of Ecological Environment Protection of the State Oceanic Administration, Xiang Youquan, Deputy Secretary-General of China Oceanic Development Foundation, Zhu Dezhou, Deputy Director of the Publicity and Education Center of the State Oceanic Administration, Huang Yingfeng, Deputy Secretary-General of China Young Volunteers Association and Deputy Director of the Young Volunteers Action Guidance Center of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, Huang Liangzan, Deputy Director of Hainan Provincial Department of Oceans and Fisheries, and Wen Bin, Vice Mayor of Haikou attended the activity and delivered speeches. Zhang Weiwei, Deputy Director of the Business Department of the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, Xu Xiangrong, a researcher from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhao Daxing, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Association for NGO Cooperation, attended the activity and delivered keynote speeches.

Deputy Secretary-General Xiang Youquan said in his opening speech that the International Beach Cleaning Day is an international public welfare activity that embodies the  attention and efforts of people of insight around the world on marine environmental protection. By holding the national coastal cleanup activities on the International Beach Cleaning Day, we can effectively promote beach garbage control, unite the public welfare forces of social love, publicize the marine environmental protection cause, and enhance the national awareness of the marine environmental protection, which is highly consistent with the development philosophy of China Oceanic Development Foundation. The ecology and environment protection is a cause that will benefit the present and the future. Therefore, the Foundation is willing to actively provide various support for such activities and is willing to make joint efforts with relevant parties to achieve the goal of keeping the coastline clean a duty for everyone. Xiang Youquan put forward the following expectations for the national coastal cleanup activity. First, make the beach cleanup an national activity that everyone can participate in, to attract more people to join this public welfare action and create a good atmosphere of "everyone is responsible for protecting beaches". Second, promote the establishment of a long-term mechanism for beach garbage control and form a good situation in which social forces participate together with the lead of government departments, ensuring a long-term managed beach garbage disposal. Third, build the beach cleanup activity into a well-known public welfare brand and form a branded and lasting public welfare project.

Deputy Director Zhu Dezhou said in his speech that the Publicity and Education Center has been committed to the education of marine ecological civilization and the promotion of the awareness of marine environmental protection, constantly creating an activity platform with prominent themes, rich forms, full connotations and good results, and promoting the in-depth understanding of the construction of marine ecological civilization. We are delighted to see that, with the coming of Beach Cleaning Day every year, the social welfare organizations all over the country have organized volunteers to spontaneously carry out coastal cleanup activities, spread knowledge on marine environmental protection and publicize concepts of marine environmental protection. The International Beach Cleaning Day has become a brand of public welfare activities with broad mass base, willing public participation and good publicity effect. The tireless enthusiasm and energy of volunteers is touching and leading more people to contribute to the blue ocean and clean ocean.


Huang Yingfeng, Deputy Secretary-General of China Young Volunteers Association and Deputy Director of the Young Volunteers Action Guidance Center of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, attended the event and delivered a speech

Deputy Director Huang Yingfeng pointed out in his speech that he hoped that organizations of the League at all levels and the Young Volunteers Association would tell the stories of the ocean and the youth well together with the marine system, and hoped that the vast number of young workers and young volunteers in the marine system will tell the story of volunteers well together. China Young Volunteers Association and Young Volunteers Action Guidance Center of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China will work together with the Publicity and Education Center of the State Oceanic Administration and other relevant units to build China into a Marine Potestatem with developed marine economy, leading marine science and technology, healthy marine ecology, stable marine safety and strong marine control, striving to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!

Huang Liangzan, Deputy Director of Hainan Provincial Department of Oceans and Fisheries, said in his speech that Hainan is an island province with beautiful environment, blue sea water, and white beaches. The beautiful coast is a beautiful scenery and a precious resource for coastal tourism in Hainan. The cleanliness of the beach reflects not only the management level of the government but also the civilization level of citizens, directly representing the image of Hainan as an international tourism island. We will take this beach cleanup activity as an opportunity to further strengthen the protection of the marine environment. At the same time, we hope everyone can make concerted efforts, starting from ourselves, from a small thing, and from the beach cleanup. The beach cleanup is not only a form of public welfare and environmental protection but also the transmission of civilized action. It is hoped that through this activity, our volunteer team for protecting the ocean will continue to grow, making the sea in Hainan bluer, the beach whiter and the coast more beautiful.

After the launching ceremony, the participants visited the photo exhibition of "Marine Ecological Civilization and Garbage Management". The exhibition is divided into five aspects: "Advancing Marine Ecological Civilization", "Plane Creation from Marine Garbage", "History and Present of Marine Garbage Management", "Marine Garbage: Misplaced Resources" and "Beautiful China Depends on Beautiful Ocean". It reflects the unremitting efforts and achievements of China's marine ecological civilization construction work, the initiatives and experiences of China’s marine garbage management, and the foresight of the Party and the government to promote sustainable utilization and development of the ocean and marine resources, as well as the good situation of the whole society concerning on the marine ecological protection and jointly promoting the construction of marine ecological civilization.

In addition, during the International Beach Cleaning Day activities held in Baishamen Beach in Haikou, Liaoning Dalian, Fujian Chongwu, Shandong Qingdao, and other cities in the morning, volunteers classified the picked garbage and filled in the Beach Garbage Monitoring Record Form, providing powerful data support for improving the level of the disposal, management, and policy advocacy of the marine debris.
